Childhood: J.K. Rowling was born Joanne Rowling in Yates, England on July 31, 1965 to Peter James Rowling and Anne Volant. Her father worked for the Rolls Royce company and made airplane engines there after leaving the Navy. In her childhood, she moved 2 times, finally settling in the town of Tutshill (near Chepstow) in the Forest of Dean, on the Wales England border. Also she started her ambition to be a writer at the age of 6, writing her first story called 'Rabbit'.
Education: When she was younger she went to Tutshill Primary School, then Wyedean Comprehensive School. She went to college at Exeter University in Exeter, England where she got her French and Classics degree. She studied French there because her parents said that bilingualism will help her in her career as a secretary.
Career: After college she worked as a researcher at Amnesty International, and while in that job she started planning the outline for each Harry Potter book and started writing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. She then moved to Portugal and became a teacher, teaching English as a foreign language. After her divorce, she then moved to U.K. with her daughter Jessica and finished the first Harry Potter book. After publishing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, she became an author. When publishing Harry Potter, her publisher said to use her abbreviations because that a woman's name would not appeal the target audience of young boys. So since she didn't have a middle name, she used her paternal grandmother's name, Kathleen.
Accomplishments: J.K. Rowling is the youngest self-made woman billionaire, having a net-worth of 1 billion, but she is now a millionaire because she has given so much to charity. She also was given in 2001 Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) given to her by the Prince of Wales for contributing to children's literature. In 2008 she was given the Lifetime Achievement Award by The Galaxy National Book Awards.
Death: J.K. Rowling has not passed away yet, she currently resides in Edinburgh, Scotland at age 49 with her husband, Anesthetist Dr. Neil Murray, whom she married on December 26th, 2001. Her 3 children Jessica (21 turning 22 in July), David (11), and Mackenzie (10), live with her and her husband in Edinburgh.
